Unlike any other form of literature or entertainment, Fairy Tales help children to discover their identity and suggest experiences compulsory to develop their character. In Bruno Bettelheims Life Divined from the Inside Bettelheim states that Fairy Tales intimate that a rewarding, good life is within ones reach scorn adversity-but only if one does not shy away from the hazardous struggles without which one nookie never achieve true identity (Bettelheim 106). Anne Sextons Cinderella is a perfect example of Bettelheims definition of a Fairy Tale.The story of Cinderella is a classic story that has had many different versions. Anne Sextons version, begins as Cinderellas mother is on her death bed. She is telling Cinderella to Be Devout. Be Good. Then I will smile down from heaven in the line of reasoning of a cloud. (Sexton 85) With the death of Cinderellas mother, we get Bettelheims first example of a Fairy Tale adversity for Cinderella. As the story goes on, Cinderellas obtain ma rries another woman. She has two daughters, making a family of five. Cinderellas father dies, leaving Cinderellas stepmother in charge of Cinderella and the family. With the loss of her father, its seem that all Cinderella can face is adversity. Cinderella became her stepmother and stepsisters maid but kept her chin up.
